THOMAS M. SKOVHOLT, Ph.D., ABPP Licensed Psychologist (he/him)
Dr. Skovholt works to develop a positive connection with the client so together we can get at the problem and find a solution. The goal is to reduce difficult feelings such as depression, anxiety, or anger, and add some happiness and excitement about life.
Doing therapy and counseling for many years gives Dr. Skovholt an optimism about the power of the therapy and counseling process, as well as an ease that comes only with lots of professional experience. Dr. Skovholt have worked with many individuals and couples, age 18 and up into the senior years.
Dr. Skovholt has gained and developed much information to address client concerns through the process of doing the therapy and counseling practice, through teaching it to University of Minnesota students, and through presenting workshops to practitioners in the helping, health, and education professions. His own life experience covers many years and helps him understand challenges at different life stages. Living and working as a teacher of counseling in different countries (Turkey, Norway, Singapore) has helped him understand many concerns of minority and international individuals.
In therapy and counseling, Dr. Skovholt enjoys exploring a variety of general issues, as well as focusing on some specific areas. These include burnout and resilience, the work-life balance, career concerns, managing success, intimate and close relationships, reacting to loss and disappointment, and working with men who find it unnatural to open up about one’s problems.
Off work, Dr. Skovholt has a lot of fun spending time with family and friends, biking and cross-country skiing, enjoying the Gunflint Trail and Lake Superior, watching sports, going to movies, and more.
